The Challenge of Vehicle Import

The transfer of a passenger car – even declared as household goods – is a particular challenge and can only be managed with a professional service provider. The relevant legislation was only recently adjusted, which is why up-to-date information is particularly important.

Important Restrictions

  • Only passenger cars from EURO 5 may be imported. Older vehicles are excluded from import.
  • Swiss vehicles may only be driven in Greece for 6 months with Swiss license plates. After that, the vehicle must either be re-registered or exported.

The Cost of Vehicle Import

The total costs are generally high, which is why an import rarely justifies itself. The following costs may apply:

  • Import tax: High additional costs can arise when importing a vehicle (30–40% of the vehicle's value).
  • VAT (24%)
  • Registration fees
  • Luxury tax for more expensive vehicles
  • Costs for the professional service provider

Binding figures are usually available upon request from the customs office. Various parameters such as make, year of manufacture, engine capacity, and CO₂ emissions are used for cost calculation.

Recommendation: Buy a Car in Greece

It is advisable to carefully consider whether importing a vehicle is worthwhile. In most cases, it is cheaper and easier to buy a car directly in Greece. The Greek used car market is well developed, and new vehicles are available at similar prices as in Switzerland.

Vehicle Tax in Greece (Τέλη Κυκλοφορίας)

Vehicle tax is paid annually in advance. The calculation depends on the vehicle's year of manufacture:

Vehicle Type Calculation Basis Cost (approx.)
Vehicles before 2010Engine capacity80–200 € per year
Vehicles from 2010CO₂ emissionsDepending on emissions

Vehicle Insurance in Greece

Third-party liability insurance is mandatory. The costs are usually between 150 and 400 € per year – significantly cheaper than in Switzerland. Partial and comprehensive insurance are optional and offered by many Greek insurers.

Technical Inspection (KTEO)

The technical inspection (KTEO – Κέντρο Τεχνικού Ελέγχου Οχημάτων) is required every 2 years. The costs are approx. 50–75 €. The KTEO corresponds to the Swiss MFK (Motor Vehicle Control).
