Driving license renewal in Greece - especially after retirement age

In Greece, the driving license is not valid for life, especially if you are past retirement age. Once you reach a certain age, special regulations apply to ensure that older drivers continue to be fit to drive. It is therefore important for pensioners to know the deadlines and examinations in advance so as not to be surprised or risk longer driving bans.

When and how often does the driver's license have to be renewed?

Basically:

  • Up to the age of 65, the Greek driver's license is usually valid for 10 years; An innovation then takes place in the same way as for younger drivers.

  • From the age of 65, the driver's license must be renewed every three years, unless a medical certificate prescribes an earlier innovation.

  • From the age of 80, the innovation becomes even stricter: The driver's license must then be renewed every two years, each time with a medical examination.

Note: These deadlines apply typically for Class B (passenger cars); other classes (e.g. trucks, buses) can have drastically shorter validity periods.

Medical examinations and tests for seniors

From the age of 65, a medical examination that checks your ability to drive is usually required to renew your driver's license. Typically required are:

  • A certificate from a general doctor (therapeutic report),

  • An ophthalmologist's certificate (eye test, field of vision, color vision),

  • From the age of 80, an additional neurological or psychiatric report to check cognitive abilities and responsiveness.

An additional rule has been in effect for several years: drivers who are over 74 years of age In addition to the medical certificate, the authorities must also repeat a practical driving test to check responsiveness, parking and general behavior in traffic. This test is without a driving instructor, but accompanied by an examiner, and must be repeated every three years up to the age of 80, and thereafter every two years.

Documents and procedure of the innovation

The following documents and information are required:

  • valid identity card or passport (with a copy)

  • current driving license

  • medical report (general doctor, ophthalmologist, if necessary). Neurologist/Psychiatrist),

  • Tax ID (AFM) and social security number (AMKA)

  • 3 passport photos in driving license format or a digital photo via MyPhoto on gov.gr,

  • e‑Parabolo (digital fee payment confirmation)

  • Copy of the registration certificate from the immigration authority

  • Optional: blood group confirmation (only if it should be on the new driving license; get it from a doctor if necessary)

The application can be submitted online via the official portal gov.gr; There the system guides you step by step through the innovation, including photo data and payment. Alternatively, contact the KEP Citizens' Office, who will prepare and submit the documents for you.

Tips especially for pensioners in Greece

  • Appointment early do: Register about 2-3 months before your driving license expires to avoid bottlenecks.

  • Use health care: Use regular check-ups (ophthalmologist, family doctor) so that you can easily meet the deadlines.

  • Costs at a glance: Medical certificates usually cost out of pocket; Expect to pay around €130.

  • Alternative mobility: If there is a risk of medical restrictions (e.g. severe vision problems, heart/dementia diseases), it may make sense to switch to public transport, taxis or ride-sharing services at an early stage.
