Driver's License Re-registration - Mandatory Within One Year
Swiss citizens are legally obliged to exchange their Swiss driving license for a Greek driving license within one year of taking up residence. The KEP Citizen Service Center can help with this.
The Legal Obligation
Swiss citizens are legally obliged to exchange their Swiss driving license for a Greek driving license within one year of taking up residence. This period begins on the date of the registration certificate from the Aliens Authority.
Official information: Mitos.gov.gr: Driving License Exchange
Two Options for Exchange
Directly at the Authority: You go directly to the competent traffic authority (Υπηρεσία Μεταφορών) with all necessary documents.
Via the KEP Citizen Service Center: The KEP forwards your documents and assists with the application. This is particularly recommended, as the KEP is familiar with the process and can save you a lot of effort.
Required Documents
Original Swiss driving license
Copy of passport
Affidavit according to Article 8 of Law 1599/1986 (can be filled out at the KEP)
Completed application form
Confirmation of payment of fees of 30.00 Euros
Copy of the registration certificate from the Aliens Authority
3 passport photos in driving license format (known in photo shops; cost approx. 10.00 Euros)
Blood group confirmation (optional – only necessary if the blood group is to be noted on the driving license)
Process and Waiting Time
After submitting all documents, you will first receive a temporary driving permit. The actual Greek driving license will be issued after a few weeks and can be picked up or sent by mail. In the meantime, you are allowed to drive with the temporary certificate.
