Organisation of the Swiss Abroad OSA
The mouthpiece of the Fifth Switzerland
Since 1916, the Organisation of the Swiss Abroad (OSA) (SwissCommunity) has represented the interests of Swiss citizens living abroad, also known as the "Fifth Switzerland".
What exactly is the OSA?
The OSA is a politically and religiously neutral foundation based in Bern, supported by around 750 Swiss associations and institutions worldwide. It is recognised as the voice of the Swiss Abroad vis-à-vis federal authorities, parliament, and the public.
What does the OSA stand for?
The organisation primarily advocates for the following issues:
Information and advice on emigration, stays abroad, and remigration.
Representation of the interests of Swiss Abroad (e.g., regarding voting rights, OASI/DI regulations, educational matters).
Promotion of contacts between Swiss Abroad and with Switzerland, for example, through Swiss associations, language, and cultural offerings.
Structure and organs of the OSA
The highest body is the Council of the Swiss Abroad (also known as the "Parliament of the Fifth Switzerland"), which comprises around 120–150 members from abroad and Switzerland. In addition, there is the Secretariat of the Swiss Abroad (now known as "SwissCommunity"), which coordinates daily services, information, and advisory offerings.
