Why a Greek mobile number is so important

A Greek mobile number is essential in Greece for many everyday situations and dealings with authorities:

  • The Gov.gr Wallet App only works with a Greek mobile number
  • The Tax Office requires a mobile number when applying for a tax identification number (AFM)
  • Many online platforms use the Greek mobile number for two-factor authentication
  • Local service providers (landlords, tradesmen, doctors) prefer to communicate via a Greek number

The most important providers

In Greece, there are several major mobile phone providers:

Provider Network Coverage Price Level Special Features
COSMOTEVery good, even on islandsMedium to highLargest coverage, recommended
VODAFONEGoodMediumGood roaming options
WIND (Nova)Good in citiesInexpensiveGood data packages

You are safest with COSMOTE, although it is not the cheapest provider. Not all providers can guarantee good reception everywhere in Greece – it is advisable to check the reception of the desired provider at your future place of residence.

Get a prepaid card before departure

It is worth considering getting a prepaid card before your final emigration. Such cards are available for, for example, 15.00 Euros for two months, and they can be topped up electronically before the expiry date.

The reason: The tax office requires a mobile number when applying for a tax identification number (AFM). Alternatively, you could have the tax advisor's mobile number entered and change it later.

Keep Swiss mobile number?

Many Swiss abroad keep their Swiss mobile number for a transitional period to remain reachable. This is possible, but please note:

  • Roaming costs can be high
  • Many Swiss banks and authorities require a Swiss number for SMS codes
  • A dual-SIM solution (Greek + Swiss SIM) is practical
